BookBoipeba is the southernmost island of the Tinharé Archipelago, on Bahia's southern coast, about 200 km from Salvador. It sits just below Morro de São Paulo, separated from it by the Rio do Inferno — and that extra stretch of water is why the island stayed quiet while its neighbour turned into a party hub.
Heading to Morro de São Paulo instead? No road reaches Boipeba: the last leg is always by boat. The traditional route chains a ferry, a bus and a launch, and usually eats up a full day. Our transfers cut that to about 4h00 by combining van and speedboat, with every connection already arranged.
Salvador → Itaparica
about 1hThe crossing of the Bay of All Saints, from São Joaquim terminal to Bom Despacho, on Itaparica Island. This shortcut by water avoids driving all the way around the bay — almost twice the road distance.
Itaparica → Southern coast
2h to 3hFrom the ferry landing, the van drives down Itaparica Island, crosses to the mainland and continues through Nazaré and Valença to the boarding point. This is the longest stretch of the trip.
Southern coast → Boipeba
20 min to 1hThe final water crossing, along the Rio do Inferno and out to open sea. Duration varies with the boarding point and the type of boat.
Arrival → Villages
variesNo cars run on the island. Getting between Velha Boipeba, Moreré and Cova da Onça is done on foot, by boat or by tractor.
Doing it on your own — ferry to Bom Despacho, bus to Valença or Torrinha, then a launch — is cheaper, but it costs you the first day of your trip and depends on catching every connection.
Abrir no Google MapsBoipeba is warm all year — temperatures rarely drop below 20 °C. What really changes is how much it rains and how busy the island gets. The most balanced window runs from September to December: summer weather arriving, good seas, and prices still well below peak.

Little rain, steady sun and an island still empty. This is when you get the natural pools of Moreré almost to yourself.
Busy island, full guesthouses and peak prices. Come if you want the buzz — and book everything well in advance.
It rains more and skies are often overcast, but usually in short bursts rather than washed-out days. In exchange, the island is at its cheapest and emptiest.
An island with nearly five centuries of documented history, protected by law, that decided not to let cars in.
Boipeba derives from M'boi Pewa, meaning flat snake — a reference to the sea turtle, long present in the island's waters.
Jesuits founded the Village and Residence of Boipeba there, one of Bahia's oldest colonial settlements. Between 1608 and 1610 it was raised to town status.
The Church of the Divino Espírito Santo, built by the Jesuits, is the island's greatest historical monument and still stands in Velha Boipeba.
Since 1992 the islands of Tinharé and Boipeba form a protected area, and the region is recognised by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve.
No car crosses over to the island. Everything happens on foot, by boat or by tractor — which preserves the environment and explains the silence you hear at night.
With a transfer, it takes about 4h00 depending on the option. On your own, chaining ferry, bus and launch, it usually takes a full day.
Not all the way: the final leg is always by boat, and no cars cross over. On the island you move on foot, by boat or by tractor.
September to December, when there is little rain and the island is not yet crowded. December to Carnival is high season, busier and pricier. April to August is rainier but the emptiest and cheapest.
They are different. Morro de São Paulo has more infrastructure and nightlife; Boipeba is quieter and better preserved, with small villages and empty beaches. Those after calm usually prefer Boipeba.
